Carpentaria, an 'epic' novel centering on indigenous issues in Australia's Gulf Country, has won this year's Miles Franklin Literary Award.Previously won by luminaries such as Peter Carey and Tim Winton, this award recognises a 'published novel or play portraying Australian life in any of its phases'.
This year's choice, written by Alexis Wright, is seen as a critical step in the recognition of the importance of indigenous stories and writing in Australia.
