Well, I finally finished it.... and I just loved it. I was glad that my score (pre-finishing) was high.

It's the value placed on each word. It reminds me of (or evokes, I guess) a time when life was slower and literature was more valued. When time taken to read was considered an education, rather than a luxury. The slow pace (which would irritate me with anyone other than Ian McEwan) simply thrilled me.

Please excuse me barging into your comments like this, but I'd like to recommend my own novels as possible book club choices. My first novel, OUT OF THE SILENCE was published by
Random House Australia in 2005 & won the 2006 Ned Kelly Award for
first crime novel. The novel is a fictionalised account of a turn-of-the-century infanticide, with Vida Goldstein and the Australian
suffrage movement providing the subplot. My second novel, THE STEELE DIARIES, recently released by Vintage Australia, is loosely based on
the Tucker/Hester/Reed entanglement, and deals with the complex relationship between motherhood and creativity. While both novels have a historical element, they also contain many contemporary resonances - particularly for women - with plenty of scope for wide-
ranging book club discussions.

If you'd like to read either of the novels, let me know and I'll send you a copy.

All best,

Wendy James
